Tigers Shutout by Eastern Illinois in Series Finale

Nashville, Tenn. -- Tennessee State fell in the final game of the Ohio Valley Conference series with Eastern Illinois at Tiger Field on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers used a two-hit performance from Stephanie Maday to shutout the Tigers 4-0.

TSU dropped to 3-14 in the OVC and 10-26 overall, while the Panthers improved to 20-15 and 10-6 in conference.

Jennifer Givens opened the bottom of the first with a single into left field showing promise for the Tiger offense. Givens was doubled up as she was attempting to steal while Aisha Walker popped up to the catcher. EIU was able to turn the easy double play as the speedy outfielder was already at second.

Tedra Alford would step to the plate next and single through the left side of the infield. Alford was stranded at first as Devin Amar scorched a line drive out to centerfield. The Tigers would not register another hit the rest of the game.

Maday issued a leadoff walk to Jordan Rehl to open the second, but then retired the next 13 batters. With one out in the sixth, Givens reached as she was hit by a Maday pitch. Walker followed with a ground ball to first that was mishandled allowing Givens to advance to third. Walker was able to move up to second as the Panthers attempted to throw out Givens. With two outs, Amar drew a walk loading the bases for Rehl.

With the Tigers trailing 4-0, Rehl and Maday battled for nine pitches. On the final pitch of the at bat, a foul ball, Walker was called out for leaving early ending the TSU last threat.

Shea Morris took the loss falling to 7-15 as she tossed a complete game allowing only two earned runs. Morris fanned six Panthers to increase her OVC leading total to 134. In the process the freshman moved into third on the TSU Single Season list, passing Caitlin Eaton's 130 set in 2009.

TSU will return to the field on Thursday, April 12 as they conclude their OVC series with Jacksonville State with a single game. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Tiger Field.
