Tiger Softball to Face SWAC and MEAC Opponents

Nashville, Tenn.-The Tennessee State softball team looks to continue their solid beginning to the 2012 season as they travel to Alabama for four games. The Tigers will participate in the Alabama State Classic on Saturday, February 18, with a 12 p.m. game with the host Hornets. At 6 p.m., TSU will face off against Savannah State for the last game in the one day event.

The weekend road trip will conclude on Sunday as Coach Dabney and his 2-2 squad travel to Huntsville for a doubleheader against Alabama A&M. The first of the twin bill versus the Bulldogs is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Last Week: The Tigers competed in the Palmetto Classic hosted by the University of South Carolina and finished 2-2, including a win in the season opener over the Gamecocks 4-2. TSU followed with a 5-3 win over Cleveland State before dropping the final two games, 8-0 in five to Western Kentucky and 3-1 in eight to Winthrop.

The pitching staff finished with a 3.77 ERA and struck out 22 batters in 26 innings of work. Shea Morris led the team finishing 1-1 and a save, while posting a 1.24 ERA. The freshman hurler fanned 14 batters and issued just four free passes in 17 innings pitched. Juniors Tedra Alford and Jennifer Givens led the charge offensively for the Tigers. Alford was 4-for-12 (.333) with a double, a triple, two runs scored, two rbi, a walk and a stolen base. Givens hit .308, 4-for-13, crossing the plate three times and stole three bases in as many attempts.

Alabama State finished 0-5 at the Auburn Tigers Classic during opening weekend. Meagan Dixon finished the tournament going 5-for-15 (.333) with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Bailey Patt pitched 18.2 of ASU's 31 innings and had a team best 5.79 ERA.

SSU opened the 2012 campaign with a three-game sweep over Howard (8-0, 11-3, 6-1) and then dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the College of Charleston (2-8, 0-1). Chelsea Parrish leads the offensive attack with a .583 batting average (7-for-12) with a double and a triple. Savannah State is 9-of-10 in stolen base attempts and are led by India Morgan and Shamyra Adams who are each a perfect 3-of-3.

Madison Hedderly leads the pitching staff with a 2-1 record and a 0.00 ERA in 19 innings. Madison has fanned 29 batters opposed to just three walks issued.

AAMU returns eight starters, including junior catcher Jasmin Riley who led the Bulldogs with a .420 batting average, eleven home runs and 34 RBI. In the circle, Alabama A&M returns all four pitchers from a staff which finished with an 11.58 ERA. Junior college transfer Brittany Harmon and freshman Anisa Britt look to be fixtures in the Bulldogs rotation.
