Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State saw a late inning surge come up short against St. Bonaventure at Tiger Field on Saturday afternoon. A game that saw a 43 minute delay, after just four pitches, due to lightning ended with the Bonnies holding on to a 3-1 win. SBU jumped to 10-9 and sent TSU to 7-14 on the season.
The last two games of the evening, including the Tigers and Mississippi Valley State game, were cancelled due to four lightning delays throughout the afternoon.
St. Bonaventure was very efficient with their offense as they scored three runs on three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. Tiger starter Susie Burke retired the first six batters she faced before giving a lead-off single in the third. The Bonnies manufactured a run via a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to get on the board first.
After giving up a one-out walk, the Tigers lost a golden opportunity to get out of the inning by missing a chance to turn a double play on a bunt play. After Burke caught a pop up, the lefty turned to first to try and get the runner, who had wondered off too far. Her throw was not able to hook up with second baseman Tayler Shimizu and allowed the runner to retag and advance to second. Two pitches later SBU increased the score to 2-0 with a single up the middle.
With one out in the fourth, Burke surrendered a single before hitting a batter to put runners on first and second. The senior pitcher got the ground ball she needed but short stop Tedra Alford's backhanded toss to third was not in time as the Bonnies loaded the bases. Burke (0-1) was relieved by Olivia Gamache after a very solid start. SBU scored their third, and final run, of the game as Gamache hit the first batter she saw making the score 3-0.
Gamache threw the final 2.2 innings not allowing a hit, while walking one and hitting another SBU batter.
In the TSU sixth, Shimizu and Alford led off with back-to-back singles. The two would advance one base each two batters later as Devin Amar reached on a St. Bonaventure fielding error. Jordan Rehl put TSU on the scoreboard as her bases loaded walk forced in Shimizu cutting the lead to 3-1. The Tigers last true threat would end there as Jen Sansano (6-3) retired the next two Tigers.
The Tiger Classic concludes on Sunday with four games on tap. The Tigers close out the three-day event with a 3:45 p.m. game with Mercer. Go to tsutigers.com and visit the Tiger Classic Tournament page for complete schedule.
