Tigers Drop 5-0 contest to #6 Tennessee

Knoxville, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee used a pair of runs in the first and three more in the fifth to defeat Tennessee State in front of 886 fans on a rainy Wednesday evening. The Tigers hung in with the #6 Lady Vols, the second Top 10 team they have faced this season, but were unable to mount a comeback in the 5-0 contest. The two teams sat through a 55 minute rain and lightning delay, which caused game two of the scheduled twin bill to be cancelled. With the loss, TSU is 11-35 on the season while UT improved to 41-9.

The Tigers were held at bay by Tennessee pitcher Ivy Renfroe who allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out ten. Senior Kelly Troglin broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning with a high chopper up the middle. Troglin was inches away from registering the Tigers first hit in the second inning as she hit a rocket a ball by the third baseman, but it was ruled foul erasing what seemed to be a potential double.

Devin Amar was the first Tiger to reach base with a walk in the fourth inning and picked up a hit in the seventh. TSU was unable to piece together an attack against the Lady Vols junior hurler.

Shea Morris worked the first 4.1 innings and surrendered nine hits and two walks. Tennessee's team speed was a major difference as they picked up six infield hits and five stolen bases to put pressure on the Tiger defense. The freshman pitcher stood in and battled as she fanned five batters before yielding to Olivia Gamache. The sophomore pitcher closed out the final 1.2 innings allowing one hit and two walks.

Morris was credited with the loss and is 16-6, while Renfroe improved to 16-6.

The Tigers will celebrate senior weekend as they host Morehead State for an Ohio Valley Conference series. Saturday's double header will start at 1:00 p.m. TSU will honor their four seniors prior to the 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday.
