Sunday, March 6, 2011

Deland, Fla. --- The Tennessee State University softball team fell to Elon University, 6-2, in the consolation game of the Stetson Invitational.

Tennessee State (6-15) held the advantage in hits but Elon (11-4) was able to pull off the win.

Caitlin Eaton was charged with the loss for the Tigers as she registered six hits, three walks and four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Tedra Alford went 2-for-4 at the plate while recording a double and a stolen base for TSU. Katye Brown and Caitlin Eaton each went 2-for-3 as Brown also notched the Tigers' only RBI of the game.

Six scoreless innings saw TSU fall behind, 6-0, with only one frame left to play.

In the top of the seventh, back-to-back singles up the middle from Brittany Davis and Shanika Johnson sparked a Tiger rally. Caitlin Eaton singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw. In the meantime, Johnson scored.

Eaton later crossed the plate following a single from Katye Brown. The rally, however, was cut short as the inning ended before the Tigers could post anymore runs.

Tennessee State tallied nine hits and two errors while Elon recorded six hits and no errors.  Each team left five runners stranded on base.

The Tigers return to action this weekend when they face the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech in conference play on Saturday (March 12) and Sunday (March 13).  The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the TTU Softball Field.
