Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team will return to action this weekend with a three-game series against league opponent Tennessee Tech.
The Tigers (6-15) will see their first conference action of the season on Saturday when they face the Golden Eagles. TSU has dropped nine straight and will look to snap the skid and get off to a good start in the conference race.
Tennessee State is most recently coming off a disappointing 0-5 showing at the Stetson Invitational in Deland, Fla. During the tournament the Tigers tallied a total 27 hits and while notching a .216 batting average. Caitlin Eaton recorded six hits, including a double and a homerun, and scored three runs over five games. Tedra Alford finished the tournament with five hits a couple of doubles.
Tennessee Tech (7-7) has won five straight contests and will host a quartet of non-conference opponents over the next three days leading up to the series versus Tennessee State. The Golden Eagles will face Chattanooga on Tuesday before matching up with Bowling Green and Appalachian State on Wednesday. TTU will conclude the non-conference home stand with Western Kentucky on Thursday.
Brooke Basten leads the team with a .429 batting average while Melody Christian (.370) has tallied a team best 17 hits. Kaliegh Gates (.276) leads the team with 11 RBI.
Last season, Tech claimed the season series, 2-1, at Tiger Field. TSU dropped the first two games (8-0, 2-0) before defeating TTU, 4-3, in the finale.
Overall, the Tiger offense is led by Caitlin Eaton's .397 batting average and team best 23 hits. She also has five doubles, one triple and one homerun on the season. Tedra Alford (.288) has registered 17 hits while Brittany Webb (.268) leads the team with 16 RBI.
Game times for Saturday's doubleheader are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. while Sunday's single game will begin at 1 p.m.
