Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team will make their second tournament appearance of the season at the 2011 Ragin' Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La. The tournament will take place February 18 through 20, at Lamson Park.
The Tigers will face schools from three different conferences, The Sun Belt (Louisiana-Lafayette), American East (Maine) and Southland Conference (Stephen F. Austin).
The Tigers will match-up with Stephen F. Austin in the opening game of the tournament on Friday at 11 a.m. before playing Louisiana-Lafayette in their evening game at 4 p.m.
Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks, projected to repeat as Southland Conference champions are currently 0-6 on the young season after opening the season at the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational. The Lady Jacks suffered losses to Ohio, Southern Illinois, No. 8 Michigan and Houston and were most recently swept by the Texas A&M Aggies, losing game two of their double header by the run-rule in six innings.
Louisiana will enter the tournament ranked No. 16 as the Ragin' Cajuns have jumped off to a hot 5-0 start after cleaning the slate at the Louisiana Classic where they faced Rhode Island, Arkansas, Prairie View A&M and Sam Houston State.
On Saturday, the Tigers will take on Maine at 10 a.m. before facing Stephen F. Austin for the second time at 5:30p.m.
Maine (0-0), was selected to finish fifth in the pre-season America East Conference this season will be kicking-off their season at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational against Louisiana after finishing second in America East play last season with a 23-28, 11-7 record.
On Sunday, the Tigers will close the tournament against Louisiana-Lafayette at 12:30 p.m.
Tennessee State (3-1) comes into the Invitational looking to improve on their hot start as the Tigers went 3-1 last weekend at the Tiny Laster Tournament in Conyers, Ga. The Tigers defeated South Carolina State, North Carolina A&T, Hampton, and fell only to Florida A & M.
The Tigers will be leaning on the bats of offensive leaders Jill Gardner and Brittany Webb. Gardner leads the team with a .500 batting average and has seven RBI and one home run on the season. She is followed by Webb, who is batting .455 with eight RBI and one home run. Senior Jalisa Bradley is also a Tiger to be on the lookout for as she leads the team in home runs (2) and runs scored (5).
