Nashville --- The Tennessee State University Tiger softball team will play its home opener Wednesday with a doubleheader against Belmont University. The double dip against the Bruins starts at 4:00p.m. at the TSU Softball Complex.
TSU (4-5) comes into the twin billing looking to go over .500 on the season. The Tigers went 1-4 over the weekend at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational. The field featured (No.16) Louisiana-Lafayette, Maine, and Stephen F. Austin. The Tigers opened the tournament with a win over SFA before suffering four straight losses.
Freshman Aisha Walker, batting .423 to lead TSU at the plate, was recently named to the Ragin' Cajun All-Tournament team. She recorded at least one hit in all five of TSU's games last week. She had one hit and one run in TSU's win over Stephen F. Austin before going 2-for-3 in the final contest of the tournament.
The Tiger offense will also be looking for help at the plate from seniors Caitlin Eaton, who is batting .409 on the season, and Brittany Webb, who is batting .364 on the year with a team leading 9 RBI.
Belmont is 3-5 on the young season after opening the season at the Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Spring Tournament and the Austin Peay Spring Classic. The Bruins picked up wins over IUPUI, UMKC, and Austin Peay, while suffering losses to Wright State, IUPUI, Austin Peay, Ball State, and Cleveland State.
The Bruins bat .227 as a team, led by Ashley Byers' .348 average. Belmont has drawn 32 walks as a team, while Bruin pitching only issued 28 free passes. The Belmont pitching staff comes in with a 6.60 ERA, led by Devon Schmidt's 3.75 mark.
The first game of the double-header is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
