Softball travels to cross-town Lipscomb

Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Lipscomb at Draper Diamond starting at 4 p.m.

The Tigers (9-20) will face the Lady Bisons after dropping a pair to Chattanooga last night at Tiger Field.  TSU came up on the short end of a, 2-0, decision before suffering a, 10-4, loss in game two.

Bridget Metzger (.667) went 2-of-3 at the plate for TSU and recorded a run in the doubleheader. Caitlin Eaton tallied three hits and two RBI over both games. As a team, TSU hit .173 and committed four errors in the sweep.

Overall, Tennessee State has a batting average of .238 and a slugging percentage of .316. TSU has committed 31 errors on the season and has an earned run average of 3.93. The Tigers lead the OVC in team fielding while ranking sixth in pitching and seventh in batting.

Brittany Webb (.333) continues to lead TSU offensively with a team best 29 hits and 18 runs batted in. Webb has recorded an OVC leading 10 doubles and two homeruns this season. Bridget Metzger (.329) leads the team with 17 runs and has 24 hits, including eight for extra bases. Caitlin Eaton (.316) also has 24 hits in addition to 16 RBI.

Lipscomb (29-7) opened this week rated third nationally in NCAA Division I with a 1.29 ERA. The Bisons are 17th with a .807 win-loss percentage, 18th in batting with a .322 average and 19th in fielding percentage (.972).

Individually, pitcher Whitney Kiihnl is first in the nation in hits allowed per seven innings (2.04). She is second in earned run average (.64) and fifth in shutouts with 9. She is eighth in wins (19) and 12th in strikeouts per seven innings (10.8). She is 13th in strikeouts overall with 201.

The Bisons have tallied 316 hits on the season and have 10 players that are batting better than .300. Abby Reese (.400) leads Lipscomb with 44 hits and seven homeruns to go along with 23 RBI.
