Tigers drop series finale to Redhawks

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Tennessee State softball squad dropped the final game of an Ohio Valley Conference series to Southeast Missouri State on Saturday. The Redhawks (13-21, 4-9) used a five-run fifth inning to charge past TSU (10-24, 5-8) and post a 7-5 victory.

Senior Tamara Perkins put the Tigers on the board with a lead-off home run over the centerfield fence. Freshman Brooke Blackford followed with a single to left field on the next pitch and the Tigers looked to be on their way to a big day at the plate. But, SEMO pitcher Stefanie Barnes was able to get out of the jam in the first.

After the Redhawks tied the game in the third, the Tigers answered with two runs in the fourth. With bases loaded Perkins hit a hard ground ball to the SEMO third baseman, which had problems with the backhand attempt. The ball trickled away allowing senior Bridget Metzger and junior Jalisa Bradley to score and give TSU a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth, TSU took a 4-1 lead on a seeing-eye single by Bradley, scoring junior Brittany Webb who had reached after being hit by a pitch for the tenth time this season. But the Redhawks would then explode for five runs in their half of the inning.

Sophomore Megan Hedrick kept the SEMO batters in check through the first four innings, but was lifted after an rbi triple in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Natalie Papini (0-4) replaced Hedrick and was touched up for three runs off four hits.

The Redhawks scored another run off Papini in the sixth extending the lead to 7-4. The Tigers rallied in the seventh with junior Caitlin Eaton, senior Christy Hill and Metzger hitting three consecutive hard line drive singles, with Eaton scoring on the final hit of the three to cut the lead to 7-5. But that is as close as the Tigers could get as Barnes would retire the next three batters to preserve the win for Southeast Missouri.

The Tigers travel to Clarksville on Wednesday, April 14, for the final game of their OVC series against Austin Peay. The single game under the lights is set for 6 pm.
