Softball prepares for crucial game at Austin Peay

Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team will make the short trip to Clarksville for a crucial OVC match-up with Austin Peay on Wednesday, April 14.

Tennessee State and Austin Peay, along with Tennessee Tech, are currently tied for seventh place in the OVC standings. Both teams are fighting for a tournament spot as only the top six teams go to the dance.

Tennessee State (10-24 overall, 5-8 OVC) dropped doubleheaders to Chattanooga (0-2, 4-10) and Lipscomb (2-11, 0-3) and went 1-2 against Southeast Missouri (0-9, 6-4, 5-7) last week. Junior Caitlin Eaton led the Tigers with three home runs and seven RBI. In the win over Southeast Missouri, Eaton went deep twice.

The Tigers are ranked eighth in the OVC in batting (.237) and ninth in team pitching (4.35). TSU has an away record of 2-9 this season.

Caitlin Eaton currently leads TSU with a .322 batting average and has 29 hits, including three homeruns. Brittany Webb (.310) has a team high 31 hits, 11 doubles and two homeruns. Bridget Metzger (.306) has 26 hits, including eight for extra bases.

Austin Peay (13-25 overall, 5-8 OVC) split a doubleheader with Belmont (7-2, 6-7), took two from Evansville (9-8, 3-1) and went 2-1 against Murray State (2-3 (8), 9-3, 4-2) last week. With the series win over Murray State, the Lady Govs have won back-to-back OVC series for the first time since 2007. Freshman Shine Huwe finished the week with one double, four homeruns, six runs scored and 13 RBI. Senior pitcher Abby Marby picked up three wins, including a complete game victory versus Belmont.

The Lady Govs have a batting average of .235 (9th in OVC) and a team earned run average of 3.87 (7th in OVC). Brittany Williams (.305) leads the team with 36 hits and 19 runs while Tiffany Smith (.300) has 30 hits, including 11 doubles.

Morgan Brewer (9-7) leads the pitchers with a 2.81 era.

The Tigers will look to capture the series 2-1, as both teams split a doubleheader in the earlier meeting. TSU picked up a 5-2 win in game one before dropping a, 5-4, decision in extra innings in the second contest.

First pitch for Wednesday's single game is slated for 6 p.m.
