Metzger, Eaton and Webb Garner All-OVC Honors
Thursday, May 7, 2009

Nashville --- Softball’s Caitlin Eaton was selected to the 2009 All-OVC first team while Bridget Metzger and Brittany Webb garnered second team honors.

Caitlin Eaton was an offensive force for Tennessee State this past season leading the Tigers in hits, homeruns, RBIs, batting average, on base percentage, walks, slugging percentage and total bases. The Baltic, Conn. native, finished tied for first in the OVC in homeruns and ranks in the top ten in the OVC in total bases (4th) and batting average (3rd). She finished the season leading the Tigers strikeouts while ranking fourth in the OVC.

”I am so happy for Caitlin that she was named as a first team All Conference selection, commented head coach Joyce Maudie. “She was an impact player for our program and put up some impressive numbers offensively, ranking in the OVC and national statistics.  Caitlin’s success is a testament to her hard work and commitment during the off season.  She is a very gifted athlete who is just realizing her true potential.”

Bridget Metzger had the second best hitting percentage on the team and led the squad with 28 runs. The Rochelle, Ill. native tallied a team-best 14 doubles, tied for third in the OVC. She recorded 44 hits, second best on the team and notched 18 RBIs. Metzger had a slugging percentage of .429 and a fielding percentage of .942. She has had multiple hits in 14 games.

Brittany Webb had seven multi-RBI games and 10 multi-hit games. She had the third best batting average on the team and tallied a team third best 39 hits on the season. The Knoxville, Tenn. native led the team in sacrifice flies and notched 23 RBIs, second best on the team. She finished with a fielding percentage of .942 and a slugging percentage of .419.

“I am equally pleased that Bridget and Brittany were named as second team All OVC selections.  They each had terrific seasons, defensively and offensively, and ranked in numerous individual and career statistics.”

Eaton, Metzger, and Webb combined for over forty percent of the Tigers’ hits and RBIs this season. They recorded 62 out of TSU’s 180 runs and tallied 223 total bases. Eaton, Metzger and Webb held the top three batting averages on the team.

“While team success is the ultimate goal of our program, these individual accomplishments are an important part of that process.  It was tremendous that the league coaches saw the talent on our team; especially considering how young we were this season.  To have three athletes named to the OVC team is great representation for our program and for Tennessee State University.  Given that we had two sophomores and a junior representative, the program’s future is very bright.  I am extremely proud of all three of these student-athletes – they are very deserving.”
