Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team overcame a 3-0 deficit but eventually fell to Jacksonville State, 5-3, in eight innings on Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Tennessee State (10-12, 2-2 OVC) recorded five hits in the game and committed one error while Jacksonville State (16-8, 3-0 OVC) tallied seven hits and two errors.

In the top of the first inning, pitcher Caitlin Eaton got off to a good start, striking out two consecutive batters. Back-to-back walks and a double, however, led to JSU capturing a quick 2-0 lead.

JSU added another run in the top of the third to make the score 3-0 before TSU mounted its comeback.

In the bottom half of the third, TSU capitalized off of a hit and two JSU miscues to cut the deficit down to one run. With two outs, Christy Hill reached on a receiving error by the first basemen. Immediately following, Jennifer Culberson reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher while Hill advanced to second.

The next batter, Bridget Metzger, hit a double to left center to score Hill and Culberson all the way from first.

In the bottom of the fourth, with the Tigers trailing 3-2, Caitlin Eaton knocked a solo homerun over  the center field fence to knot the game 3-3.

Neither team was able to score over the next three innings, forcing the extra frame.

In the top of the eighth, JSU’s Ledbetter was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double to right center. Another run scored following a sacrifice fly to give the Gamecocks a 5-3 lead.

Caitlin Eaton singled down the left field line with two outs in the bottom of the frame but she would be left stranded on base.

Caitlin Eaton (6-6) threw eight strikeouts in the contest and only walked three runners. Eaton was also 2-of-3 at the plate and recorded her eighth homerun of the year.  Bridget Metzger recorded a team best two RBIs.

TSU and JSU will conclude the season series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
