Softball Heads to Sixth Annual Georgia Softball Classic

Nashville ---The Tennessee State University softball team will participate in the Sixth-Annual Georgia Softball Classic hosted by the University of Georgia this weekend.

The tournament will kick-off on Friday, February 20 at the UGA Softball Complex.

The Tigers will face the Jaguars of IUPUI (3 p.m.) and host Georgia Bulldogs (7 p.m.) on Friday (2/20) before matching-up with UNC Greensboro Spartans (9 a.m.) and Ball State Cardinals (3 p.m.)on Saturday (2/21). On the final day of the tournament (2/22), TSU will meet the Thundering Herd of Marshall (9 a.m.).


The Tigers are coming of a double-header sweep (12-4, 14-0) over Alabama A&M on Saturday (2/14).


Host, University of Georgia climbed to No. 16 in the USA Today/NFCA top-25 poll and No. 17 in the Softball top-25 poll after going 4-0 last weekend in the Red & Black Showcase, the first of the Bulldogs’ two home tournaments this season. Georgia won all four of its game via shutout and outscored its opponents 38-0 by defeating both Longwood and Elon, 11-0, and defeating both Cleveland State and Winthrop, 8-0.


Ball State will open its 2009 season at the Classic, and Marshall enters with a 4-4 record after opening with a 3-1 mark in the Sportco Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. Marshall went 1-3 last week in the Wilson Tournament in Tampa, Fla., with the victory coming in their final game of the event, a 3-1 win over Illinois.


IUPUI opened its season at the Country Inn & Suites Bradley Softball Invitational in Pekin, Ill., dropping all four of its contests. UNC Greensboro will bring a 6-4 record to the Classic. After going 2-3 at the USF Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa, Fla., the Spartans went 4-1 last weekend in the Green & White Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
