Softball Closes Out the Regular Season with SEMO

Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team will wrap-up the regular season by hosting OVC opponent Southeast Missouri in a three-game series this weekend.


The Tigers (18-28, 8-12 OVC) are coming off of a 4-3 win over Tennessee Tech last week and will look to finish the regular season strong.


Last week, Tennessee State dropped a pair to Middle Tennessee (0-12, 0-3) before picking up the 4-3 win over Tennessee Tech. Sophomore Brittany Webb drove in three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift TSU past Tech. She finished the week with a .375 batting average. Sophomore pitcher Caitlin Eaton went 1-1 with 11 strikeouts in 14.0 innings of work last week.


In the meantime, Southeast Missouri took both of a twinbill with Eastern Illinois (6-2, 11-3) and swept Eastern Kentucky in a three-game series (4-3, 8-5, 4-3) to extend its winning streak to a season-best 11 games. It’s the longest winning streak since 1998 and is tied for the sixth longest in school history. Junior Alex Ramirez hit .500 with a 1.083 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage. She drove in seven runs while scoring six.


Last season, Tennessee State dropped the season series, 2-1, to Southeast Missouri on the road.


As a team, TSU is batting .246 and has a team ERA of 4.10. Eaton is hitting .378 and leads the Tigers with 45 hits to go along with an OVC leading 13 homeruns on the season. Bridget Metzger (.272) has 40 hits while Brittany Webb (.272) has notched 37 on the season.


Saturday’s doubleheader will kick-off at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday. Seniors Melanie Cruz and Royesha Goodman will be honored as it will be Senior Day. Sunday’s match-up is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field.
