Thursday, April 2, 2009

Chattanooga, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University softball team picked up a 3-0 win over UT-Chattanooga before dropping a 9-1 decision in game two.

TSU moves to 14-15 while UTC improves to 17-16 on the season.

The game one win marked the first time that Tennessee State has ever defeated UT-Chattanooga. UTC leads the series history 13-1.

For the day, Caitlin Eaton recorded two homeruns and led the Tigers with two RBIs. Royesha Goodman and Eaton led TSU with two hits apiece.

After a scoreless first inning, Caitlin Eaton got TSU on the board in the second when she knocked out her 10th homerun of the season. Royesha Goodman followed Eaton’s solo shot with a single down the left field line.

Jill Gardner came in to run for Goodman and stole second before crossing the plate on a throwing error by the UTC pitcher to give TSU a 2-0 lead.

Goodman led off the top of the fourth inning with a double to right center and then scored when Christy Hill hit a double to left center to drive her in, extending TSU’s lead to 3-0 and forcing a UTC pitching change.

TSU wasn’t able to add anymore runs to its lead but it didn’t matter as the 3-0 advantage would prove to be enough.

In the complete game win, Caitlin Eaton (9-6) held the Lady Mocs scoreless through seven innings and only allowed five hits in the contest.

Goodman was 2-of-3 at the plate for TSU while Caitlin Eaton and Christy Hill each recorded RBIs for the Tigers.

In the second game of the day, UTC used four hits to capture a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, prompting a TSU pitching change. A walk and an error, however, led to UTC loading the bases and driving in two more runs before the inning ended.

The Tigers finally got on the board when Caitlin Eaton hit a towering homerun to deep left center for her second homer of the day and 11th of the season.

UTC threatened to add to its advantage in the bottom of the fourth with two runners in scoring position and no outs. This led to another Tiger pitching change.

A two-run double, however, then put UTC ahead 7-1. Two more runs scored before the inning ended to increase the Lady Mocs’ advantage to 9-1 heading into the fifth inning.

The TSU batters went down in order in the top of the fifth, ending the game due to the mercy rule.

Kelly Troglin (1-2) was tagged with the loss while Caitlin Eaton was the only Tiger to record a hit for TSU in the game.

TSU return’s to its home field this weekend for an OVC match-up with UT Martin. Saturday’s doubleheader will kick off at 1 p.m. while Sunday’s single game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
