Tigers Down UNC Greensboro and Ball State in Second Day of Competition

Athens, Ga. – The Tigers record two more victories in the Sixth-Annual Georgia Softball Classic on Saturday, defeating UNC Greenboro, 6-3, and Ball State, 4-3. TSU moves to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Classic. The Tigers posted 12 strike outs and eight runs batted in while batting .212 on the day.

Tennessee State - 6, UNC Greensboro - 3

In the first game against UNC Greensboro (6-7), freshman Megan Hedrick (1-1) retired five batters giving up two earned runs before leaving the mound after facing one batter in the sixth. The Tigers jumped out in front 2-0 at the top of the third inning behind two unearned runs by Jill Gardner and Bridget Metzger. Metzger reached first base on a Spartan fielding error bringing in Gardner and Eaton's single to right field  scored Metzger.

UNC Greensboro fought back taking the lead, 3-2, after a run scored in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the sixth. Down one run in seventh, the Tigers rallied on a three-run Tamara Perkins' homer to left field scoring Melanie Cruz and Nichole Vincent.

Kristin Powell scored the final run of the game from a Spartan error. Caitlin Eaton (2-0) in relief, struck out two batters in the final inning. UNC Greensboro flied out for the out number three leaving three runners stranded on base.

Tennessee State - 4, Ball State - 3

In the second game, TSU hopped on the board first in the top of the fourth posting three runs on a Jalisa Bradley triple to center field, scoring in Vincent, Christy Hill, and Royesha Goodman. Eaton (3-0) started on the mound finishing with a 4.20 era striking out two batters before leaving in the fifth. Eaton faced 20 batters allowing only six hits and currently has an overall 2.88 era on the season.

Ball State (1-3) answered back in the bottom of the fifth with one down, scoring two runs before tacking on another score on a bunt to shallow third.

With the score 3-3 in the seventh, Jennifer Culberson singled to left field before stealing second. A Perkins' sacrifice bunt moved Culberson to third and scoring position. With two away, a Cardinal wild pitch scored Culberson for the go-ahead run. Susie Burke (1-1) stepped in relief at the top of the six, closing the game with one strike out allowing two hits. 

On deck, the Tigers will face the Thundering Herd of Marshall (7-5) on Sunday for their final game of the Classic.
