Softball Drops Two at Jacksonville State

Jacksonville, Ala. --- TSU softball dropped two contests as the Tigers fell to host Jacksonville State 8-0 in the first game before losing a 3-2 decision in game two Saturday afternoon at University Field.


Tennessee State moves to 10-20 (4-6 OVC) while Jacksonville State improves to 19-8 (8-1 OVC).


A two-run homerun by Jacksonville State in the first inning gave the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead early in game one. In the third inning JSU pulled away with the lead, scoring three runs in the frame. The Gamecocks then added one more run in the fourth and another two scores in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-0.


JSU pitcher Melissa Dowling held TSU to only two hits in the shut out. The Tigers’ only hits came in the fourth and fifth innings when Bridget Metger and Jalisa Bradley recorded singles to third base and left field, respectively.


Game two was scoreless until Royesha Goodman hit a solo homerun down the left line to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the fourth. JSU answered in the bottom of the inning with a run to even the score before TSU reclaimed the lead (2-1) on a solo shot by Brittany Webb to left center. Trailing 1-2, the Gamecocks used a two-run homerun from Nikki Prier to take the lead for good.


Goodman was 2-3 at the plate and picked up her first homerun of the season. Webb posted her second homerun of the year.


Both teams will meet tomorrow to play the third game of the series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
