Softball Sweeps Tech in Double Header
Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Nashville--- Tennessee State took advantage of two seventh inning errors to comeback and defeat two time defending OVC Champion Tennessee Tech 4-3 in game one before claiming a 6-5 extra innings win in the second game of the DH.

The sweep marks the first time that TSU (10-16, 4-4 OVC) has ever swept Tech in a double-header (17-18-1, 3-4 OVC).

In game one, the Tigers seemed to be out of the first inning when, with two outs, a high fly ball dropped just out of the reach of short stop Bridget Metzger. The Golden Eagles were able to score three runs before the inning was over.

Vaught, however, recovered and held the Tech offense in check in the next seven innings as she held the Golden Eagles to no runs and only five hits for the rest of the game.

TSU got on the board in the third when Royesha Goodman started the inning with a double to left center. Ashley Block entered to run for Goodman and later scored on a Jennifer Gregory single to right field.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, two consecutive dropped fly balls by Tech led to TSU tying the game and forcing extra innings.

After grounding out to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, Chelsea Brown was awarded first base on a walk due to an illegal pitch called on Meghan Maynard. Christy Hill pinch ran for Brown and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Brittany Webb moved the runner over to third before Melanie Cruz singled down the right field line to bring home the winning run and end the game.

Amanda Vaught threw eight strike outs in the win.

Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning but TSU answered in the third, knotting the game 1-1. TTU reclaimed the lead , 2-1, when Katie Speiser solo homered to center field in the fourth. The Tigers posted two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 3-2 but the Golden Eagles plated in the 7th to even the score and eventually send the game into extra innings.

With the international tie breaker rule in effect, both teams scored in the 10th inning. Tech once again scored in the top of the 11th to capture a 5-4 advantage.

With two runners on base in the bottom of the 11th, Jennifer Gregory hit a two-run double to push TSU to the 6-5 victory.

Vaught picked up her ninth win of the season while Jennifer Gregory recorded two hits, two RBI’s and scored twice.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow when they host UT-Chattanooga in a double-header. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
