TSU SOFTBALL ACADEMICALLY RANKED IN THE TOP 50 NATIONALLY

According to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the Tennessee State University softball program is ranked forty-ninth academically among two hundred and seventy-seven Division I Softball teams. This ranking is based on a 3.2 team GPA for the 2006-2007 school year. The Tigers were ranked sixty-sixth academically for the 2005-2006 terms with an overall GPA of 3.12.

In addition to the team ranking, TSU also had five members named as NFCA Academic All Americans. Four of the five individuals recognized as Academic All-Americans are on the current Tiger roster, including Sr. Katie Anderson, Jr. Melanie Cruz, and Sophomores Bridget Metzger and Tamara Perkins. Candace Hildebrand, a Sr. pitcher for the Tigers in 2007 was also named as an Academic All-American for the 2006-2007 terms. Hildebrand is currently a student-assistant coach with the Tigers. These five players were recognized as Academic All-Americans based on earning a GPA of 3.5 or greater for the 2006-2007 school year.

"The TSU softball student-athletes have done a tremendous job of staying focused on their academic mission” said Head Coach Joyce Maudie. “It is very challenging to excel both on the field and in the classroom. The 2007 team had the first winning season in the program’s history (35 wins) and they are academically ranked in the top fifty in the country: I am so proud of these young women and the way they have represented Tennessee State University! This is an awesome accomplishment!! We have to give a lot of credit for our ranking to Dr. Johnnie Smith, TSU’s Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services. Dr. Smith and her staff have invested so much into helping the student-athletes succeed at Tennessee State University. She truly cares about each and every athlete excelling in the classroom and earning their degree. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Smith on our team.”
