Head Coach Joyce Maudie has announced that four players have signed with Tennessee State University for the 2009 season. The class includes pitcher Kelly Troglin (Chattanooga, TN/Red Banks High School), outfielder Jennifer Culberson (Ellenwood, GA/ Martin Luther King Jr. High School), outfielder/catcher Kristen Powell (Old Hickory, TN/ McGavock High School) and pitcher/ If Susanne Burke (Pleasant View, TN/ Sycamore High School).
“We are so delighted about this upcoming freshman class. This is a very talented and versatile group who are committed to academic and athletic excellence. Not only are they bright students and talented softball players, they are exceptional young ladies. We are proud to have each of them as future Tigers,” stated Head Coach Joyce Maudie.
Kelly Troglin, a pitcher for the Tennessee Fury, made the Best of Preps 2nd Team and was All District in Basketball in 2007. She was also a member of the 2005 State Championship squad at Red Bank High School. Kelly will pursue her degree in the Health Sciences. She is the daughter of Jeff and Kendra Troglin. Coach Joyce Maudie stated that, “We are excited to welcome Kelly into the Tiger softball family. Kelly is a great addition to our pitching staff. She is a talented hurler who prides herself on being a fierce competitor. Her determination and her desire to succeed are two of her outstanding qualities.”
Kristen Powell hit .473 with a .945 slugging percentage in 2007 for McGavock High School. She was All District in 2007 and 2006. She plays travel ball for the Nashville attack and is in the honors program at McGavock High School. She will continue her education in Biology. Kristen is the daughter of Steve and Tracy Powell. “Kristen is a great addition to the Tiger roster. She is a versatile athlete who will spend some time behind the plate and in the outfield,” stated Coach Maudie. “She can absolutely crush the ball. I love Kristen's passion and her eagerness to learn and grow.”
Susanne Burke was a 2007 and 2006 11AA All District Selection in softball and was a member of the 2007 11AA District Championship team. She plays travel ball for the Clarksville Patriots and has also had great success as a soccer player for Sycamore High School. A member of both the National Society of High School Scholars and 11AA All Academic Team. Susie is seeking a degree in the Human Performance and Sports Science program. She is the daughter of Michael and Cathy Burke.
Jennifer Culberson, a speedy slapper/outfielder, plays travel ball with the Home Plate Athletics out of Georgia. At Martin Luther King Jr. High School was a 1st team All County selection in 2007 and 2006. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a Georgia Certificate of Merit recipient. Jennifer plans to major in speech pathology at Tennessee State. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Deitra Culberson. “Jennifer is an electrifying player, who loves to compete,” said Coach Maudie. “With her speed, she has the ability to make a huge impact offensively. We are thrilled that Jennifer has chosen to continue her academic and athletic career at TSU.”
