NASHVILLE, Tennessee-The Tennessee State softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Western Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field. The Hilltoppers used a seventh inning home run to steal game one 2-1 and outscored the Tigers 6-3 in the night cap. Tennessee State falls to 19-7 on the season, while Western Kentucky improves to 10-14. TSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game when senior Diana Clifford scored on a single by sophomore Christy Hill. The lead would hold until a two-run home run by Kelsey McCauley in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Amanda Vaught (8-2) went the distance scattering seven hits and striking out two batters. In the second game, WKU took advantage of five Tiger errors to go along with ten hits as they went on to sweep the double dip. After falling behind 4-0, freshman Bridget Metzger put life back into the Tiger offense with her first career home run in the fourth inning. TSU would cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth after an RBI triple by Clifford and an RBI single by Metzger. That is as close as the Tigers would get as Western Kentucky responded with two runs of their own in the fifth. Senior Candace Hildebrand took the loss and moved to 9-4 on the season. Hildebrand gave up seven hits and five runs, three earned, with six strike outs over five innings of work. Sophomore Stephanie Kemme pitched the final two innings surrendering three hits and one unearned run. Metzger finished the day 5-for-7 at the plate with a double, a home run, a run scored and two RBI. Hildebrand had her tenth multi-hit game of the season as she finished 3-for-4 with a run in the second game. The Tigers travel to Clarksville, Tennessee, for an Ohio Valley Conference series against Austin Peay this weekend. Start time for the doubleheader on Saturday, March 17, is scheduled for 1 p.m. The final game of the three-game set is on Sunday, March 18 at 1 p.m.
