TENNESSEE STATE SOFTBALL SWEEPS AT ALABAMA A&M
Tigers Extend Win Streak to Eight NORMAL, Ala.-Tennessee State remained undefeated by sweeping a road doubleheader from Alabama A&M on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers held on to win the first game 4-3 and extended their win streak to eight games with a 7-4 win in game two. TSU continued the best start in program history and improved to 7-0 on the year. Freshman Tamara Perkins tripled in the top of the first inning to drive in Diana Clifford, who singled and stole second, to give TSU an early 1-0 lead. Junior Jennifer Gregory followed with a single to bring home Perkins and lift the lead to 2-0 after just three batters. Five hitters later, Christy Hill delivered a bases loaded single to extend the lead to 3-0 as Candace Hildebrand, who reached on a single, crossed home plate. Katie Anderson followed with a bases loaded walk that brought home Bridget Metzger to give TSU a four-run first inning. The Bulldogs (0-9) fought back with three runs in the sixth inning off relief pitcher Lauren Weber, who would give way to Hildebrand who ended the threat. Hildebrand improved her record to 3-0 and has won six consecutive games. The senior from Moreno Valley, California, pitched 6.1 innings of four-hit shutout ball and struck out five batters. Clifford led off game two with a single and would score from third on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The score would remain that way until A&M's Angelia Heard doubled off the Tigers Amanda Vaught in the fourth inning to plate Re'Quincia Mack and tie the score at 1-1. TSU would take advantage of a Bulldog throwing error in the sixth and a triple by Anderson to take a 4-1 lead into the final inning. Vaught would help her cause in the seventh with a three-run home run to up the lead to 7-1. As in game one, AAMU would fight back with three runs off reliever Stephanie Kemme, who gave way to Hildebrand who closed out the Bulldogs for the save. Vaught improved to 3-0 pitching six innings allowing two hits, one walk and striking out 14. The Tigers will play in the MT Breast Cancer Strike-Out Classic in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Friday, February 23. First game for TSU is set for 10 a.m. versus Ball State.
