FIVE-RUN INNING PROPELS TIGERS TO SPLIT WITH LIPSCOMB
NASHVILLE, TN--The Tennessee State softball team used the big inning to take game one from Lipscomb 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field. Lipscomb (13-25) bounced back in game two with a 2-0 victory. Down 2-1 in game one the Tigers exploded for five runs on seven hits in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Senior Heather Ebersole led off with a single and scored when junior Diana Clifford's single got by Bison centerfielder Leigh Little. Senior Leena Worrell would follow with a single into right to plate Clifford. Sophomore pinch-runner Jessica Sesson scored the third run of the inning on a throwing error by the Bison left fielder after an Erin Finneran single. Senior Amanda Buhler added an RBI single down the left line, which scored senior pitcher Candace Hildebrand, and Ebersole drove in Finneran with her second hit of the inning. Lipscomb opened the scoring in the fourth when pitcher Sara Meek scored on a wild pitch. TSU responded in the bottom half of the inning; Clifford led off the inning with a single to left field and followed with a stolen base. A Worrell single advanced Clifford to third to set up a sacrifice fly to center by Hildebrand. The Bison took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Little scored on an RBI by Jessica Wilson. Lipscomb would add another run in the seventh for the 6-3 final. Hildebrand (6-9) picked up the victory scattering eight hits and three walks. Bison pitcher Allison Tyree (2-7) allowed just two hits and a walk to shutout the Tigers 2-0 in the second game. Lipscomb scored both runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Julia Richardson and a Lauren Webber wild pitch. Weber (2-7) took the loss and worked all seven innings allowing eight hits and two walks, while striking out four. The Tigers return to OVC play as they host Eastern Illinois in a weekend series. The two teams square off for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 14, and a single game at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.
