WORRELL'S THREE-RUN HOMER KEYS TIGERS'DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AT MIDDLE TENNESSEE
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- Leena Worrell's three-run homer keyed a four-run third inning in the second game and Tennessee State held on for a 4-3 victory over host Middle Tennessee to gain a doubleheader split Wednesday evening. The Tigers dropped the first game 13-5 after taking an early lead in the second inning. Worrell's blast was her second round tripper of the day and her sixth on the season. The third baseman had led off the second inning of the opener with a solo home run to give TSU a brief lead. In the second game Nira Robbins doubled, moved to third on an error off the bat of Melanie Cruz and then scored on pitcher Candace Hildebrand's single. Worrell then came through with the bases clearing homer to give TSU the 4-0 lead. Hildebrand allowed a pair of runs in the fourth and a single run in the seventh. MTSU had the tying run on base, but the game ended when Emily Samana snagged a line drive off the bat of Muriel Ledbetter. Hildebrand ran her record to 5-5 with the complete game victory, allowing two earned runs and recording five strikeouts. Hildebrand was also had two of the Tigers eight hits in the second game. Worrell was one of five Tigers to have a RBI in the first game. Worrell and center fielder Diana Clifford each had two hits as TSU had eight hits in the opener. After Worrell's HR to the opposite field, Erin Finneran's double was able to plate Clifford to give TSU a 2-0 lead. However, MTSU came back with three runs in both the second and third innings to take the lead. The Blue Raiders ended the game in the sixth inning with four runs. MTSU had 11 hits in the opener and every starter had at least one hit, but TSU committed four errors to help the home team's cause. Tiger pitchers also gave up five walks. TSU is 14-17 on the season. TSU returns to Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Tennessee-Martin as part of a scheduled eight-game road swing. MSTU is now 9-25-1 on the season.
