NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State got off to a slow start and visiting Samford took the deciding game in a three game series over TSU Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 victory. TSU committed four errors and saw Samford record seven stolen bases along with seven hits in the run victory. Samford improves to 11-25 overall and 3-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference. TSU now stands at 13-16 and 1-6. Samford took the early lead with two runs in the opening inning. Rachel Reeves was hit by a pitch an stole send and third base and scored on Jessica Owens' groundout to first base. Erin Hall singled, stole second, and scored on Katie England's double to right center to make the score 2-0. After Samford scored an unearned run in the third inning, TSU cut into the deficit with a run. The Tigers got consecutive one out singles from Heather Ebersole, Emily Samana, and Leena Worrell, the latter scoring Ebersole from second. Samford answered with two more runs in the fifth with a two-run single by Hall up the middle. TSU added a late run in the seventh as Jessica Session singled to right field for her fourth hit in the series to score Melanie Cruz who had led off the inning with a walk. Stephanie Royall won her second game in the series, allowing five hits in five innings and improves to 7-7. TSU starter Lauren Weber falls to 3-3. The Tigers will break from OVC play with a doubleheader at Middle Tennessee on Wednesday. Samford will host Troy on Thursday.
