TIGERS WIN FOR FIRST TIME AT EASTERN KENTUCKY NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Tennessee State (19-34, 4-19) softball won for the first time at Eastern Kentucky in the two teams 46-game history. The Tigers were working well on all facets of the game in their 3-2 Ohio Valley Conference win on Sunday. Senior's Heather Ebersole and Leena Worrell hit back-to-back singles into right field in the first inning to put the offense in motion. Freshman Lauren Smoot, pinch running for Worrell, stole second base just before EKU catcher Becky Werle mishandled a pitch from Kelsey Anderson, which allowed Ebersole to score from third and Smoot to advance to third. After a walk to junior Emily Samana, Smoot broke for home on a ground ball to a drawn-in second baseman off the bat of junior Candace Hildebrand. The pinch runner from Kokomo, Ind., out ran the play and slid in safely to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead after one inning. Ebersole led off the third inning with a hard single up the middle and moved to second on a ground out by Worrell. Hildebrand picked up her second run batted in of the game with a single into right field as Ebersole used a great slide-by to avoid the play at home giving TSU a 3-0 lead. Eastern Kentucky got one run back in the bottom of the third inning on an errant throw by senior shortstop Nira Robbins as she was trying to throw out a base runner at third base. The run cut the score to 3-1 and left the Colonels with runners on second and third with one out. Worrell then made the defensive play of the game as she fielded an Amy Mayrhofer grounder and pump faked a throw to first to bait Alex Merrell to take another step off of third. Worrell turned back to tag Merrell and wheeled around and threw a strike to Samana in time to get Mayrhofer at first. The double play is the 23rd on the year for Tigers who are ranked 13th in the country with .45 double plays per game. EKU threatened again in the fifth with a lead off single by Keri Macinsky and a one-out single by Merrell. The two Colonel runners advanced on a ground out to Samana before Mayrhofer lined out to centerfield as senior Amanda Buhler made her second running catch of the inning to end the threat. TSU took a 3-2 lead into the seventh after a Chanze Patterson solo-home run down the right field line in the sixth. Macinsky started the final frame with a single off Hildebrand who then gave way to freshman Stephanie Kemme who registered the first out on a sacrifice bunt that moved the EKU runner into scoring position. Kemme received help from junior Diana Clifford who chased down a line drive to left center for the second out of the inning and Robbins who squeezed a pop fly behind third base for the final out of the game. Hildebrand improved to 10-13 on the year pitching six innings scattering six hits and a walk, while striking out two. The win ties Hildebrand in the TSU record books for number of wins in a season. Kemme pitched the final three outs for her first save of her career. "This is a great win for our program," said head coach Joyce Maudie. "Candace Hildebrand had another solid start in the circle. Stephanie (Kemme) showed great composure in relief. It is huge for a freshman to come in and get the final three outs against a quality team like Eastern Kentucky. I am proud of our team's performance today." The win is the first in the Joyce Maudie era and only the third time in school history, with the two previous wins against the Colonels coming in Nashville with a 4-2 victory in 1997 and a 3-2 win in 2000. Tennessee State will conclude the season with a three-game set at Tiger Field against OVC opponent Morehead State. The doubleheader on Graduation Saturday will start at 6 p.m. with the Sunday contest scheduled for 1 p.m. Tennessee State at Eastern Kentucky Apr 30, 2006 at Richmond KY (Gertrude Hood Field) Tennessee State 3 (19-34,4-19 O.V.C.)
