TSU FALLS TO AUSTIN PEAY IN EXTRA INNINGS NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Tennessee State (17-30, 3-16) saw their bid for an OVC series win fall in the eighth inning to Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Govs (20-25-2, 10-11) pushed a run across in the top half of the extra frame to leave town with a 3-2 win. The Tigers came out fast scoring a run in each of the first two innings to chase APSU starter Ashley Elrod. Senior Nira Robbins led off the TSU side of the first inning with a single up the middle and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Senior Leena Worrell hit a two-out single up the middle to score Robbins for the early 1-0 lead. In the second, junior Emily Samana led off with a single to left field to set up a Melanie Cruz RBI-double to right center. The shot to the gap would allow Samana to race around the bases just before the relay throw from the APSU defense to give TSU a 2-0 lead. Tiger pitcher Candace Hildebrand kept the Austin Peay line-up silent until a two-out single to Brianna Venable in the fourth inning. Hildebrand (8-11) retired the next four batters and took a 2-0 lead into the sixth. APSU would score their first run as a Worrell throw soared out of Samana's reach at firstbase. Sarah Longmire followed with an RBI single to left field to tie the score at 2-2. In the eighth inning, Amy Hale recorded her only hit of the game with a lead-off single to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by relief pitcher Natasha Anderson. Freshman Stephanie Kemme, who replaced Hildebrand after the lead-off single, got Venable swinging, but the ball got away from junior catcher Erin Finneran. Hale advanced to third on Finneran's throw to Samana who tagged Venable for the out. Longmire then collected her second consecutive RBI-single to plate Hale for the game winner. Anderson (11-11) threw seven innings in relief and allowed two hits and walked one, while striking out six. Tennessee State takes to the road for a non-conference doubleheader versus Western Kentucky on Tuesday, April 23. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Bowling Green. 2006 Tennessee State University Softball Austin Peay State at Tennessee State Apr 23, 2006 at Nashville, TN (Tiger Field) Austin Peay State 3 (20-25-2,10-11 OVC) Player AB R H RBI BB SO PO A LOB ------------------------------------------------------ SIMPKINS, Jennifer ss.... 4 1 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 HALE, Amy dp............. 4 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 ANDERSON, Natasha 3b/p... 3 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 WALKER, Jennifer pr..... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 VENABLE, Brianna 2b...... 4 0 1 0 0 1 2 2 0 McCONKEY, Emily pr...... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 LONGMIRE, Sarah 1b....... 3 0 2 2 0 1 7 0 0 NEWBERRY, Taylor ph..... 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 BUSH, Ami rf............. 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 BROOKS, Megan cf......... 4 0 0 0 0 2 2 0 4 FELTS, Fallon c.......... 3 0 0 0 0 0 7 1 0 ELROD, Ashley p.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 EDMONDS, Michelle 3b.... 3 0 0 0 0 1 2 4 1 GARRETT, Nikki lf........ 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 Totals................... 33 3 6 2 0 5 24 9 7 Tennessee State 2 (17-30,3-16 OVC) Player AB R H RBI BB SO PO A LOB ------------------------------------------------------ Nira Robbins ss.......... 4 1 2 0 0 0 0 3 0 Heather Ebersole 2b...... 2 0 0 0 0 1 4 4 2 Diana Clifford cf........ 4 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 Leena Worrell 3b......... 4 0 1 1 0 1 0 2 0 Candace Hildebrand dp/p... 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 1 Lauren Smoot pr......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Emily Samana 1b.......... 2 1 1 0 1 1 16 0 0 Melanie Cruz rf.......... 3 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 Erin Finneran c.......... 2 0 0 0 0 0 3 2 0 Jessica Sesson ph....... 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 Amanda Buhler lf......... 3 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 Stephanie Kemme p/dp..... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 Totals................... 28 2 6 2 1 6 24 16 5 Score by Innings R H E ------------------------------------------ Austin Peay State... 000 002 01 - 3 6 1 Tennessee State..... 110 000 00 - 2 6 3 ------------------------------------------ E - Edmonds(5); WORRELL, L. 3(15).
