Sunday, May 2, 2004
NASHVILLE --- Despite recording seven hits, the Tennessee State softball team (16-38, 5-19 OVC) was narrowly defeated by visiting Eastern Illinois (20-32, 8-15 OVC) on Sunday at Tiger Field. The final score of the final contest of the three-game set was 2-1 in favor of the Panthers. EIU scored its two runs in the opening inning of play behind a series of singles by Rachel Karos, Mandy Lindwall and Jessica Irps and capitalizing on a costly Tiger error. Tennessee State did manage to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Sabrina Smiley (Eagle River, Alaska) notched her second double of the season and was followed by back-to-back singles by freshman Nitisha McWherter (Paris, Tenn.) and senior Shannon Hicks (Smyrna, Tenn.). A single by senior Catriona Smith (Marion, N.C.) to load the bases was unable to send a Tiger over the plate. Tennessee State returns to action May 8-9 in its final series of the season. The Tigers will be on the road taking on Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky. Action is set to begin on both days at Noon.
