BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Tennessee State softball team (13-29, 2-9 OVC) fell to Ohio Valley Conference newcomer Samford (16-26, 8-5 OVC) on Thursday afternoon in Birmingham. The Tigers dropped the opener, 7-1, and lost, 5-3, in the nightcap. Tennessee State got its only run of the game on its only hit of game one as senior Shannon Hicks (Smyrna, Tenn.) hit a one-out solo home run over the center field fence in the top of the seventh inning robbing the Bulldogs' pitcher of a no-hitter. However, it was too little too late as the Tigers fell, 7-1. The Tigers took their only lead of the day in game two. After Shelly Stanley's first inning home run gave Samford a 1-0 lead, junior Caryn Barber (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and freshman Hollie Sanders (Columbia, Tenn.) had RBI doubles in the third inning to give TSU a 2-1 lead off Samford starter Susanna Meyer. Samford responded with two runs in the fourth inning and notched two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, going on to take the second game, 5-3. The Tigers return to action on Saturday as they travel to Cookeville for a three-game series at Tennessee Tech. Action is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
