NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State fell in a softball doubleheader to visiting Mercer Saturday, losing the first game 3-1 and the second game 5-0 as the Bears broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning on the way to completing the sweep. In the first game, Mercer (18-14) took the early lead on Meghan Clark's sixth home run of the season and added unearned runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before the Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth frame. Shannon Hicks double to left center scored Amanda Buhler for the lone TSU run. TSU pitcher Justin Jontz worked six innings, allowing five hits and the lone earned run. In the nightcap, Mercer scored twice in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth inning. Mercer out-hit the Tigers 10-2 in the second game. Hicks and Laura Freeman had the two TSU hits. Reliever Alana Thomas took the pitching loss for TSU. Three Mercer pitchers combined for the two-hit shutout. TSU (8-11) hosts Alabama A&M Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader.
