NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State and visiting Cumberland University battled in pair of extra-inning contests Wednesday night with the Tigers winning the first game 5-4 in nine innings and the Bulldogs winning the second game 2-0 in nine innings. TSU's Caryn Barber and Casey Probus each had three hits and a RBI for TSU in the first game, but it was an error that scored the winning one with one out in the eighth inning. Justine Jontz pitched four and two-third innings of relief, allowing five hits and an unearned run to improve to 3-1 on the season. Cumberland's Brooke Tackett allowed just two earned runs in taking the loss for the Bulldogs. In the second game, TSU starter Alana Thomas allowed just two hits into the ninth inning, but Cumberland Morgan Willis came through with a two-run double for what proved to be the winning runs. Sarah Sparks pitched the complete game win for Cumberland. The international tie breaker was put into effect in the eighth inning of each game, placing a runner on second base to begin each team's at-bat. TSU hosts Mercer Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field in a doubleheader.
