NASHVILLE. --- The Tennessee State softball team recorded a doubleheader sweep of visiting Middle Tennessee Tuesday evening, taking the first game 1-0 and then holding on for a 10-8 victory in the nightcap. The twinbill was played on a cold and windy day at Tiger field. TSU posted its second consecutive doubleheader sweep and now stands 7-8 on the season. Middle Tennessee falls to 7-5. In the first game, TSU sophomore Justine Jontz pitched into the sixth inning allowing six hits before giving way to junior Tara Evanisko who allowed one hit the rest of the way to record the save. The Tiger hurlers stranded 10 MTSU base runners. The lone run came in the fifth inning when Amanda Buhler and Caryn Barber opened the inning with consecutive hits. Buhler later scored the winning run on a throwing error. In the second game, the Tigers built a 6-1 lead before MTSU closed the game to one run with a four-run third inning. However, the Tigers expanded the lead on Hollie Sanders' two-run homer in the fourth and Shannon Hicks two-out, two-run double in the fifth. Hicks also came through with a three-run double in the five-run third inning and finished with five RBI on the day. Evanisko came on relief in the third inning and recorded the win. Hicks pitched two and one-third innings to earn the save. Former TSU player Angie Huebner hit a three-run homer for the Lady Raiders in the third inning. Dani DeCamino had a pair of RBI and Leah Grothause had two hits and scored twice for the Lady Raiders. TSU continues its homestand by hosting Cumberland University Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader.
