SOFTBALL SPLITS HOME OPENER WITH LIPSCOMB
NASHVILLE --- After dropping the opener, 7-3, to visiting David Lipscomb (5-4), the Tiger softball team (1-1) rallied behind sophomore Amanda Buhler's single to right field with the bases loaded to take the nightcap, 2-1, on Wednesday at Tiger Field. Game one saw the Bison fight back hard after the Tigers were the first on the scoreboard in the third inning behind a single by senior Shannon Hicks (Smyrna, Tenn.) that moved sophomore Amanda Buhler (Twin Falls, Idaho) across the plate. In the fourth inning, Lipscomb's rally was started with a single by Lauren Parker that was followed by back-to-back doubles by Betsy White and Julia Davidson. The Bisons then held Tennessee State scoreless for the next two innings as they picked up two more runs in the fifth inning. Finally, in the seventh inning, the Tigers were able to get back on the board after capitalizing on a throwing error by Lipscomb but it was too little too late as Tennessee State fell in the first game, 7-3. The second game of the doubleheader was a much tighter defensive effort as neither team would get a hit until the second inning of play. The Bisons were the first to score after Kristen Tidwell crossed the plate after a TSU error. Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Tigers started to rally after sophomore Misty Adfield (Twin Falls, Idaho) smacked a double to center field. Sophomore Keisha Chattman (North Little Rock, Ark.) stepped up to the plate and smashed the first pitch deep into left field, scoring Adfield. Tennessee State held the Bisons at a stand still heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Adfield notched her second double of the game to open the Tigers' side. TSU's loaded the bases behind an intentional walk of freshman Laura Freeman (Nashville, Tenn.) and a bunt by junior Sabrina Smiley (Eagle River, Alaska). With no outs against them, the Tigers looked to sophomore Amanda Buhler (Twin Falls, Idaho) to deliver. And she did, sending the ball sailing deep to right field, scoring Adfield and giving Tennessee State the 2-1 win. The Tigers return to action next Thursday as they make up the postponed doubleheader with Mississippi Valley State. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Tiger Field.
