Chris Collins, Chloe Watson, Amber Hughes, Hannah Alsup

NASHVILLE --- Four Tennessee State University student-athletes were recognized as 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars in the 25th Anniversary edition of the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine.

The annual award is given for outstanding academic and athletic achievement. Not only were Tennessee State’s four honorees an integral part of their respective teams this season; they also excelled in the classroom.

Chris Collins (football) and Chloe Watson (volleyball) were named to the First Team while Amber Hughes (track and field) received Third Team honors. Hannah Alsup (track and field) earned honorable mention.

"It is rewarding to see our student-athletes honored with such a prestigious award," said TSU Athletics Director Teresa Phillips. "These students embody the balance of great athletic skill and strong academics. We are very proud of their accomplishments and are appreciative that they are being recognized for their success.”

In addition to their athletic ability, students named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence as well as community activism. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, the award seeks to honor students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. In addition to athletic excellence the student athletes were required to have a 3.2 GPA or higher as well as demonstrated a commitment to community service and leadership.
