Student-athletes to be recognized during basketball game

Nashville, Tenn. - More than 100 Tennessee State University student-athletes will be honored for their academic success for the fall semester on Sunday, Jan. 31, during Academic Achievement Night when TSU hosts Eastern Kentucky.

The men and women's basketball doubleheader is slated for a 3 p.m. start with the Lady Tigers, followed by the Tigers' game at 5 p.m.

The following teams and number of student-athletes will receive individual recognition during halftime of the men's game: men's basketball (4), women's basketball (8), men' golf (3), volleyball (5), men's tennis (3), women's tennis (2), football (26), men's track and field (8), softball (13), and women's track and field (4).

Students will receive certificates and will also be recognized for making the Dean's List (76), the Athletic Director's List (46), and the President's List (9).

The President's List is comprised of student-athletes who mastered a 4.0 GPA during the semester with football and men's basketball combining to lead the way with a total of nine players.

Receiving the highest cumulative team grade-point average recognition for male sports was men's tennis (3.375 GPA) and for female sports, softball (3.275 GPA).

"We are proud of the student-athletes' accomplishments in the classroom last semester, and we hope more will score a 3.0 GPA or better this semester," stated Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services Dr. Johnnie Smith. "With the rigors of practice and competition, you have to applaud the student-athletes for maintaining their focus in the classrooms."
