Athletic Academic Support
Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Welcome to Tennessee State University Athletic Academic Services Department. As the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services, I have the responsibility to oversee the academic progress and graduation of all Tiger student-athletes.  Our athletics department operates within the overall mission of Tennessee State University and is an integral part of Tennessee State's educational program. Furthermore, we support the educational mission of our institution through its pursuit of higher education and achieving academic excellence.

To our prospective student-athletes, I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve all of your academic goals.  To our current student-athletes, I encourage you to continue to take advantage of the educational services and opportunities provided for your continued success. Finally, to our alumni and fans, our student-athletes are some of the finest in the nation and like you, are proud to call themselves Tigers!

With Tiger Pride,

Dr. Johnnie C. Smith & Staff

Mission Statement

Our mission is to educate and mentor student-athletes through completion of a college degree program within a four-year time span.  We further engage in promoting academic success and setting ethical standards.

About Us

Athletic Academic Services (AAS) supports student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic demands. AAS provides comprehensive academic support services to student-athletes in all sports.  AAS is located in a centralized "easy access" area for student-athletes' convenience.   An AAS professional is readily available and ready to address the academic needs for each team member.  One of the most famous programs that aid student-athletes is the "weekly meeting" session, tested and proven to assist student-athletes with transitioning from high school to college, charter building, personal development, mentoring, time management, goal setting and academic success.

AAS integrates its services with those of the university community. For example, the AAS partners with Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Dean's Offices, Career Services,  Counseling Center, the Learning Resource Center, Disability Services, and all major academic departments.  Our AAS staff provides programming that is consistent with the university and NCAA policies in order to enhance the student-athletes' educational experience.
