NASHVILLE — The ascension of redshirt-sophomore Mikayla Thompson took another step up the hill of success after a first-place finish in the shot put on Day One of the Hilltopper Relays.
The opening day of the Hilltopper Relays consisted of just four events for both the men and women track and field student-athletes, but Thompson made the most out of the brief day thanks to her throw of 14.98m (49-01.75) in the shot put. Thompson placed second in the shot put at the Black and Gold Invitational on March 22 (15.38).
She also placed fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.95m (163-10) on Friday. Amani Taylor had a strong showing in the hammer throw thanks to a fourth-place finish with a mark of 52.16m (171-01).
Michael Willingham Jr. was the sole Flying Tiger to compete on Friday. The sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga. placed ninth in the shot put 13.43m (44-00.75) and 14th in the hammer throw 38.94m (127-09).
Day two of the Invitational begins at 9 a.m. starting with the men’s and women’s discus throw.
