YELLOW JACKET INVITATIONAL

STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men’s and women’s track and field teams open the outdoor season in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday and Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT: The Tennessee State women placed third and the men placed fifth at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship in February. For the Tigerbelles, Mikayla Thompson threw a distance of 15.73m (51-07.25) to place first in the shot put to set a new record in the indoor championships. The record was previously held by Courtney Gapelu of SE Missouri back in 2014.
Flying Tiger R’Lazon Brumfield won the individual first place medal in the long jump with a distance of 7.62m (25-00.00) and the triple jump at 15.56m (51-00.75). A pair of freshmen in Damon Hodge Jr. and Michael Thompson placed first and second, respectively, in the 400-meter dash with times of 47.64 and 47.73 seconds. Jamario Scott also found himself in the top-2 finishing second in the 200m dash (21.79).
INDOOR AWARDS: Brumfield, who was a three-time OVC Track Athlete of the Week, won OVC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. For his performance at the OVC Indoor Championship, Brumfield was named Athlete of the Championship. Grenetria Shell earned Ohio Valley Conference Co-Field Athlete of the Week award in January when she posted her then best long jump mark at the Vanderbilt Opener to win the event with a mark of 19-05.
OUTDOOR SCHEDULE: TSU will compete in five outdoor meets before the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship scheduled for May 9-11 in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Two of TSU’s outdoor meets are in the state of Tennessee (Black and Gold Invitational – Nashville; Memphis Invitational – Memphis).
