FIELD EVENTS: 10:30 a.m. | TRACK EVENTS: 1 p.m.
STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men’s and women’s track and field teams kick off the 2016-17 indoor season at the Vanderbilt Opener at the Multipurpose Facility on Saturday. The field events begin at 10:30 a.m. with running events getting underway at 1 p.m.
THE COMPETITION: Tennessee State will square off with student-athletes from a number of the top local teams including Middle Tennessee, Belmont, Louisville, Memphis, Murray State, Western Kentucky, Austin Peay, Lipscomb, Trevecca and Vanderbilt.
LAST TIME OUT: The Tennessee State men’s and women’s track and field teams held their annual Blue and White Invitational where the Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers were split up into equal teams. Amber Hughes (Atlanta, Ga.) shined on the women’s side, claiming victories in the 55m hurdles, the 300m and as part of the 4x200m relay. Daimer Gordon (Ellenwood, Ga.) – weight throw and shot put – as well as Cyra Beard (Jackson, Tenn.) – long jump and triple jump – won two events apiece. For the men, 10 different Flying Tigers won the 10 individual events.
LAST SEASON INDOOR SUCCESS: The Tigerbelles tied for 21st place at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. after winning the program’s fifth Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship. The Flying Tigers turned in a third-place finish at the OVC Indoor Championship.
UP NEXT: TSU hosts the Ed Temple Classic at the Gentry Center on Jan. 8, beginning at 8 a.m.
