Men's Track and Field Heads to Vanderbilt Season Opener

SEASON OPENER: The indoor track and field season kicks off with the Tennessee State men’s track and field team making the short trip to Vanderbilt to compete in the Vanderbilt Season Opener on Saturday. The meet gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with field events followed by running events at 1 p.m.

AT LAST YEAR’S EVENT: TSU opened last indoor season with a strong effort at Vanderbilt. Quamel Prince won the 600m with a time of 1:19.72. Earning second place finishes were Travon Alexander in the 60m in 6.91, Jerome Henderson in the 200m in 22.45, Shaquille Cragwall in the triple jump with a distance of 14.66m and Theodore Nicholas in the 1000m in 2:38.92

THE RETURNERS:  Among the returners for the Tigers are a number of competitors who finished in the top five of their respective events at last year’s OVC Indoor Championship. Quamel Prince took home second in the 800m (1:52.06), with Jemarruse Amos earning fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.26). A trio of Flying Tigers: Jerome Henderson in the 200m (22.09), Justin Young in the pole vault (4.55m) and Shaquille Cragwall in the high jump (1.98m) placed fifth. On TSU’s 4x400m relay team that took second, Prince and Kenji Anderson are back.

THE NEWCOMERS: A talented group of transfers and freshmen join the Flying Tigers this season. Among the seven true freshmen, three are Tennessee natives, while two hail from Florida, one is from Georgia and the other is from Texas.

THE STAFF: U.S. Track and Field legend and TSU alum Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice has won eight Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year Awards. Cheeseborough-Guice returns her two assistant coaches in Asha Gibson and David Rachel and is assisted by two graduate assistants, Effua Ampadu and Julian Mallory.

THE SCHEDULE: Five of TSU’s indoor meets will be held in the state of Tennessee, including the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship at the Wilma Rudolph Indoor Track inside the Gentry Center. The Vanderbilt Season Opener will be one of two trips to the SEC school’s indoor facility for TSU with the Jan. 15-16 Commodore Indoor Invitational still on the schedule.

UP NEXT: Tennessee State hosts the Ed Temple Classic on Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Gentry Center.
