NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State track and field teams will kick off their Indoor Season with the annual Blue and White Meet on Wednesday night.
The showcase will start at 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center with the long and triple jumps and conclude around 7:30 following the relays.
Both teams are coming off stellar Indoor Seasons, as the Tigerbelles won the Ohio Valley Conference Title in 2013 and the Flying Tigers placed third.
The women’s team returns most of its core talent from a year ago, including Clairwin Dameus and Amber Hughes which comprised half of the team that broke the OVC record in the 4x400 meter relay with a winning time of 3:42.73.
The mark was just the tip of the iceberg for Dameus en route to her taking home both the Indoor and Outdoor OVC Top Female of the Championship honors. The Boynton Beach, Fla. native also finished second in the long jump (20'25.00") and 55-meter hurdles (7.83), and took third in the 55 meter dash (7.07) on her home track at OVC Indoor.
Hughes, meanwhile, had a breakout campaign in her first at TSU and was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year. She also bested Dameus in the 55-meter hurdles at the OVC Championship with a scorching time of 7.68 seconds. She continued her strong season by being named Freshman of the Year in the Outdoor Schedule, too.
The Flying Tigers will be paced by Quamel Prince and Jason Griffin this upcoming season following some key departures.
At the league championship last March, Prince came up big for TSU by winning the 800-meter dash by nearly two whole seconds after completing the event in 1:51.44; Jason Griffin did too, getting gold in the 55-meter hurdles (7.54 seconds).
Both members of the men’s team later narrowly missed out on first in the 4x400 meter relay, finishing with a time of 3:15.19.
The Tennessee State track and field schedule gets under way Wednesday night at home with the Blue and White Meet at 5:30 p.m.
