100 Moments: Ward-Holmes Wins Two MVP Awards

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by recognizing the accomplishments of one of the premier student-athletes Tennessee State track and field history.

Dominique Ward-Holmes broke onto the track and field scene as a freshman in 2005. She was selected OVC freshman of the year in the outdoor competitions, but her true success came later in her career.

During her sophomore season, Ward-Holmes won the 400 meter dash in the OVC Indoor Championship with a time of 56.57. Her first-place finish allowed the Tigers to be runner-up of the conference championship.

In 2007, Ward-Holmes earned Female Athlete of the year honor. She did so by taking first in the 400 meters with a time of 53.39, recording the second fastest-ever at the OVC Championships. She was also a part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team (3:42.93).

That year, Ward-Holmes also finished third in the NCAA Regional 400m Dash with a time of 52.28 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR.

The OVC Indoor and Outdoor Female Track Athlete of the Year advanced to the NCAA finals in the 400m event at Drake University in Des Moines, IA.

In 2008, Ward-Holmes captured gold in four events (55m, 200m, 400, and 4×400 relay) and was named Female Athlete of the Championships, adding to her previous OVC Indoor Female Athlete of the Year honor. Ward-Holmes' wins in the 200 and 400 were her third straight in those events making her only the third female in OVC Indoor Track history to win those titles three consecutive years.

Ward-Holmes' performance allowed Tennessee State to win the OVC Indoor Championship for the first time since 2003.

Ward-Holmes' time of 53.25 in the 400 meter dash is an OVC record that still stands to this day.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
