Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers get set for OVC Championship

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men and women's track and field team will cap the regular season when they compete in the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

The Championship will take place from May 6-7 in Murray, Ky. inside Stewart Stadium on the campus of host university, Murray State. Events will begin at noon on Friday with the discus and Saturday's finals are slated to start at 8 a.m. with the hammer throw.

Several athletes who rank among the top half of the OVC in their respective events lead the Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers.

For the Tigerbelles, Martinique Guice will look to complete her reign in the long jump entering the Championship with the top long jump mark at 20"6.25 (6.25m). The seven-time OVC champion is seeking her third consecutive outdoor title in the event after winning her third indoor long jump crown in February.

In the 400m, TSU will look to their tandem of Gabrielle Todd (56.31 secs.) and Ashley Taylor (56.45 secs.). Both rest back-to-back in the Conference in the event this year at 8th and 9th.

In other field events, Daniecce Ward ranks 4th in the high jump at 5'6 (1.68m) posting her personal best in the event this year. Brittney Washington has shown signs of improvement through the season and is coming off her fastest time in the 800m at 2:15.11, which is 5th on this year's OVC list.

The Tigerbelles are coming off a strong outing at the Vanderbilt Invitational two weeks ago in which a handful of times improved including a six-second shed off their time in the 4x400m relay. In last year's OVC Outdoor Championship, the Tigerbelles finished 7th overall and were spotlighted by Guice's win in the long jump and Todd's second-place finish in the high jump. RECAP...

The Flying Tigers will look to improve from last year's 4th place finish in the 2010 Championship. Arthur Combest and Xavier Walton finished second in their respective events to help TSU finish runner-up in two of three events. RECAP...

Combest won his second indoor title in the high jump in February and will look to capture his first crown in outdoor competition. This season, Combest enters the Championship ranked first in the high jump (6"5.5 - 1.97m) and fourth in the 110m hurdles (14.88 secs.).

Newcomer, Royce Dates, posts the best mark in the long jump at 24"8.5 (7.53m) and will compete in his first OVC Championship.  He his followed by Walton on the list at 4th (23"6.0 - 7.16m) and Avian Hughes sitting 5th (23"1.75 - 7.05m).

Also in the field events, Jamal Henderson in the high jump  (6"4.0 - 1.93m) stands third in the OVC ranks after scoring in last year's Championship.

On the track, Michael Rideout and Lequinn Davis help lead TSU with their times sitting in the top three in the league. Rideout is second in the 400m (47.61 secs.) after posting the Conference's fastest time for five weeks. Davis holds the third best time in the 100m (10.82 secs.), the fastest of his career.

The team has also built both relays into contenders with the 4x100m relay ranking second with a time of 41.59 seconds. The 4x400m relay holds the third best time at 3:17.01, recently posting the time after competing at the Vanderbilt Invitational. RECAP...
