Flying Tigers pick up top three finishes at ETC

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men's track and field team got back on track after competing at home in the 2011 Ed Temple Classic.

The Flying Tigers were among 11 collegiate teams and several track clubs on the Wilma Rudolph Indoor Track on Saturday in the Gentry Center.

In the 200m, TSU posted two runners in the top three. Julian Mallory spotlighted the team's overall performance picking up the win with a time of 22.31 seconds and Lequinn Davis followed for third at 22.98 seconds. Mallory also finished fourth in the 55m with a time of 6.42 seconds.

The 4x400m relay team was edged out settling for second. The combination of Davis, Phillip Myton Jamal Henderson and Chris Hobbs posted a time of 3:27.99.

After posting the fastest time in the 55m hurdle prelims at 8.07 seconds, Arthur Combest notched second in the finals improving his time at 7.83 seconds.

Early in the meet, Myton and Hobbs finished fourth overall in their events. Myton finished the 400m in 51.05 seconds and Hobbs completed the mile in 4:54.59.

For the field events, Xavier Walton was the top collegiate finisher in the long jump. Despite finishing fourth among the field of competition, Walton missed first place overall by six inches; getting off to a good start on the season in the event with a mark of 23-00.75 (7.03m).

Next up, TSU will head to Carbondale, Ill. to compete in the Saluki Open hosted by Southern Illinois. The two-day event will begin on Friday, Jan. 14.
