Nashville, Tenn. - After a double 5th place finish in their season opener last week, the Tennessee State University men and women cross country teams will travel across town to compete in the Commodore Classic.
The meet is hosted by Vanderbilt University and will be held at Percy Warner Park on Septemeber 19th. The men's 8k is set for a 9 a.m. start with the women's 5k race scheduled for 10 a.m.
TSU will face several Ohio Valley Conference opponents for the first time on the season. Teams set to compete include: Austin Peay (OVC), Bethel, Blue Mountain, Brenau, Eastern Kentucky (OVC), Freed-Hardeman, Georgia State, Jacksonville (OVC), Lipscomb, Memphis, Morehead State (OVC), Murray State (OVC), Rhodes, Tennesee tech (OVC), Union, Sewanne U. of the South, and Valparaiso.
This will be the first 5k/8k race for the teams after the men competed on a 5k course with the women running a 2-mile trail at the Chattanooga Powerade Invitational.
Last season the women finished 8th in the team standings at the classic with host Vanderbilt winning the meet. Freshman Apryl Johnson stands as TSU's top runner after coming in first on the team last week with a time of 14:31 (2-mile).
The men return to the classic after a one-year abscense and are led by Chris Hobbs and Phillip Myton. Hobbs and Myton finished back-to-back for the Tigers in the season opener. In the 5k, Hobbs was first for TSU with a time of 18:17 with Myton following with 19:31 clocking.
Next, both teams are scheduled to compete in the Morehouse Cross Country Classic on September 26th in Atlanta, Ga.
