Cross Country opens 2009 season at Powerade Invitational

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men and women cross country teams will jump start the 2009 season when they compete in the Powerade Invitational hosted by Chattanooga. The competition will be held at the Moccasin Bend Race Course on Friday, September 11th. The women will compete in the 2-mile race at 5:45 p.m. with the men's 5k scheduled for 6:15 p.m. 

The men and women teams set to compete incldue: Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee State, Kennesaw State, and Mercer.

The Tigerbelles enter the season after losing last season's top runner Rahab Kagaruki to graduation. Kagaruki led the Tigerbelles finishing first on the team in five of six competitions. Returning is senior Jaleeca Jacobs who steadily completed the season as the Tigerbelles second runner. The team also returns seniors Pia Perez and Jasmine Jacobs.

Adding depth to this year's squad is Ohio Valley Conference long jump champion, junior Martinique Guice, sophomore Danielle Exum and freshmen Kya Riley, Apryl Johnson, Gabrielle Todd, and Kanisha Ladler.

The men return two experienced runners in juniors Phillip Myton and Chris Hobbs. The duo is supported by cross country newcomers sophmores Nathaniel Moore, Michael Rideout and juniors Dwayne Johnson and Arthur Combest.

Next, both teams will run in the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic on Sept. 19 at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn.

 

Directions to Moccasin Bend

From the North, East or South, take I-75 to I-24 Downtown. (Note: DO NOT continue on I-24 towards Nashville-take the right fork at the crossroads). Take 27 across the Tennessee River. Exit Manufacturers Road. Turn left - go under the over pass to Hamm Road (approx, 1/2 mile). Turn left on Hamm Road to a "T" intersection. Turn left onto Moccasin Bend and follow to the end (approx. 2 miles).

West Bounders use Route 27N exit or I-27N (from I-24).

From Soddy-Daisy follow 27S toward Chattanooga. Exit Manufacturers road and turn right at end of exit ramp. Follow road to Hamm Road (approx, 1/2 mile). Turn left on Hamm Road to a "T" intersection. Turn left onto Moccasin Bend and follow to the end (approx. 2 miles).
