Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men and women cross country teams competed in their first 5k/8k race of the season at Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic on Saturday morning (9/19) at Percy Warner Park.
The women competed in the 5k finishing 18th in the team standings with 535 points. Senior Jasmine Jacobs was the team's top performer completing the 5k course in 23:58.09 (99).
Several TSU runners would finish back-to-back in the team scoring. Senior Jaleeca Jacobs and freshman Apryl Johnson finished second and third for TSU, while senior Pia Perez and Gabrielle Todd rounded off the team scoring.
Jal. Jacobs finished (103) with a 24:12:22 clocking with Johnson (110) running her first 5k at 26:43.07. Perez followed one second behind at 26:43.12 (111) while Todd made her season debut completing the race with the time of 27:32.68 (112).
For the men, only three runners recorded times without the team posting a final score. Chris Hoobs finished first for TSU for the second straight week, averaging 6:22.6 per mile, to finish the course at 31:41.90. Phillip Myton followed with less than a mintue at 32:33.85 with Xavier Walton competing in his first 8k finishing with a time of 42:44.39.
The TSU cross county teams will return to action when they compete in the state of Georgia on Saturday, September 26th.
The women will change races from their previous scheduled Morehouse Classic to compete in the Mercer RunFit Sports Invitational in Macon, Ga. The women's 5k is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start at the Georgia Industrial Children's home.
The men will continue their original schedule, competing in the Morehouse Classic. The meet is set for an 8:30 a.m. start with the venue now changed to Perkerson Park.
