Tennis Begins Fall Practice

NASHVILLE --- The men and women’s tennis team took the court on Monday for their first practice before their fall season began.

Head Coach Monroe Walker and last years’ team accomplished a lot in just his second season at the helm. Walker and his team look to add even more accomplishments this year as the entire women’s team returns and the men return everybody except Amir Daniel and Second Team All-OVC selection in Daniel Bernal.

Last season the women won two conference matches for the first time in TSU history. The Tigers beat Belmont 5-1to win their first conference match since 2001. The women’s tennis team went on to beat SEMO in the season finale ending their season with a 9-11 record.

Walker added freshmen Zina Graves who was a four star recruit and Ashia Jones who never lost a high school match as the number one singles player. Jones also ranked 79th in the USTA. The women’s team will begin their season Sept. 2 in the Drury Invitational in Springfield, MO.

The men’s tennis team completed last season with a 9-14 record. However, they won their first conference match since 2002 beating Eastern Illinois 4-3. Daniel Bernal went on to become a second team selection for his play during the season. This is the second time in TSU history that a men’s player has earned an all-conference award.

Three players will look to assist the Tigers men’s team this year including Matthew Brown who redshirted last season after transferring from Western Kentucky. Kato Richardson won three straight district tournament championships in high school. Larry Sloan will provide depth after he was named MVP three straight years at his high school.

The kickoff to their season will also begin Sept. 2 in the Drury Invitational in Springfield, MO.
