Men’s Tennis Drops Spring Break Match to South Dakota State

ORLANDO, Fla.- The Tennessee State men’s tennis team opened spring break in Orlando with a 6-1 loss to South Dakota State on Sunday.

TSU (6-6) won at No. 3 doubles, but the Jackrabbits (10-6) earned victories at No. 1 and 2 doubles to give SDSU a 1-0 lead heading into singles. In singles play, sophomore Grant Maddox (Greenbrier, Tenn.) played his way to a win at No. 6. SDSU went onto win at the other five singles matches.

At No. 3 doubles, Jorge Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) and Shashank Nautiyal (Delhi, India) paired up for a 6-4 victory over Chuck Tang and Lucas Pereira.

Maddox’s hard-fought victory in singles came in three sets. Facing Tang, Maddox won the first set, 7-6, before falling in set number two. In the third-set tiebreaker, Maddox earned a 10-8 victory for the win.

“Shashank (Nautiyal) battled hard today, he fought hard in doubles,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “Also, he battled in singles before cramping. I was not happy how we competed today. We have to want it more than the other team. We have to grind matches out. We were right there with them, but they wanted it more. Grant (Maddox) played amazing. He listened to the game plan, pulled out the win and showed fight."
